Final poster - Process + Review

Updated: May 11, 2022

Original Image

Editing Process/Effects Applied

1 - Applied desaturation effect.

Reasoning

This is a connotation of the genre, the lack of colour invokes mystery and possible lifelessness, the mystery links to the crime genre while the lifelessness links to the horror genre.

2 - Applied slight shading around corners.

Reasoning

The shading adds an ambience to the black and white image, this shows it is apart of the horror genre as shading of these types is conventionally seen in other posters like this one.

3 - Applied a red gradient around the border.

Reasoning

The added red gradient adds depth to the shading applied previously, it enhances the horror esque look. (It even links into the crime genre with the red glare)

4a - Added secondary image. (Tested idea, will be replaced)

Reasoning

I had the idea of blending a bunch of images together that were taken on the shoot as well as a photo of the actor who played the killer. However, I found the idea to difficult to pull off properly, It would make the image appear clogged when I tried to do what I wanted.

4b - Added secondary image.

Reasoning

I decided to apply one singular image instead of applying several, this decision made the poster less cluttered in the end and overall easier to look at. It also applies a horror/crime poster connotation to my poster.

5 - Added transparency and fading to secondary image as well as set position.

Reasoning

I made the image transparent to add a sense of atmosphere to the image, as well as implying that there is a looming threat.

6a - Added desaturation filter to secondary image.

Reasoning

This filter would help blend the secondary image into the background as well as keep with the aesthetic I want my poster to portray, however the image transparency will be lowered as it doesn't look as good as I initially thought it would.

6b - Added gentle red hue to secondary image as well as increased opacity to 100%.

Reasoning

The red hue makes the secondary image more clear as well as making it the centerpiece of the poster as all the focus would be placed upon it. The image is also more visible due to the decreased transparency.

7 - Added title text with applied color.

Reasoning

The title text is made to look threatening as well as display the genre through color and font. This was inspired by conventional horror fonts as well as color schemes typically found in horror/crime products.

8 - Added shading behind title text.

Reasoning

The shadowing behind the text makes the text more visible as well as adding to the dark, shady atmosphere. This addition improved the appearance of the text.

9 - Smoothed out secondary image, also added actor names beneath title text.

Reasoning

The smoother secondary image makes it more realistic as well as making it easier to look at. The placement of the actor's names is conventional to movie posters, the actors usually draw in viewers who have seen movies they have starred in.

10 - Added Netflix branding.

Reasoning

This addition is essential to creating this poster, it displays the branding subtilty while making it noticeable enough to see upon first glance, this came from my research and analysis of previous products made by others.

11 - Added large shadow at the bottom of the poster as well as improved Netflix branding appearance.

Reasoning

I added the shadow at the bottom to make all the text at the bottom stand out a lot more, giving them more flare. The improved Netflix branding appearance makes the poster itself appear authentic to real world posters.

Final Product

This is the finalized version of my individual product (Poster). I went for the color scheme and theme that not only suited the genre but also captured the vision I wanted. The dark reds contrast with the blood colors which can be found in both genres, while the darker grays and blacks are primarily found in the horror genre. I used the image in the center of the poster to show the villain/antagonist to the viewer. I also tried to use conventional elements of a movie poster such as a tagline ("A Netflix documentary.") and release date.

The typography fits the genre due to its scratched and dirty appearance (Excluding the Netflix branding). I primarily featured the cast who acted in the trailer, this is because it is a convention in the industry to use actors on marketing to attract viewers who have seen the actors work before. I believe I have effectively used my photoshop skills to develop this product authentically and properly. Its appearance reflects that of genuine horror and crime documentary posters.

A story can be told through the images in the background, the abandoned hoodie as well as the image of the antagonist. This was my main goal when deciding the images for this poster as it would easily be referenceable to the people who have seen the final product before but could also intrigue new viewers into seeing the product for the first time.

This will go along with the other products in my press pack as merchandise as well as advertising.
