Primary research will aid me when building the foundation of this project, this is because the gained knowledge will help me understand audiences better as well as general marketing and what I should include in my products (In regards to age grouping). Knowing my audience will help me make my project the best it can be, it will also help me make my project for the appropriate age demographic.
Fact 1 - Research shows that the number one country by Netflix User Penetration is the United States of America. I chose this because it not only helps me gage what language our product should primarily be in but also what languages to include in our product (Ex. Subtitles, Dub).
Fact 2 - According to statistics, older audiences of 35-54 typically watch Netflix more than someone older or younger than those ages. I chose this because it helps me understand how many people will be able to watch the product we are creating as well as how much of the viewer base we are missing out on.
Fact 3 - According to research, Netflix (And its shows) is available for up to 27 languages as well as more that are continuing to be added. I chose this because it helps me gather the specific areas of Netflix viewers.
Fact 4 - A 2016 study showed that 58% of Netflix subscribers subscribe to Netflix for their original shows and film rather than pre-existing content. I chose this because it shows that audiences would watch our content and primarily subscribe to Netflix for it.
Fact 5 - A single account doesn't always mean one person is watching at a time, people using multipul profiles and watching in groups occurs constantly as well as account password sharing. I chose this because it helps me gage how many viewers we could possibly get.
Section 1: For which Generation is Netflix most popular? Who is Generation X? Why do I think this?
According to research, Netflix is most popular with Generation X. Generation X (Gen X for short) is the group of people born between 1966 and 1980. This generation grew up in an era where technology was advancing but not as accessible as it is today. They are described as: resourceful, logical and good at problem solving. I think that Netflix is the most popular among this generation (Gen X) because the new technology is bringing content that Gen X may enjoy as well as content they are familiar with.
Section 2: Which television channel is the most popular among millennials? Who are millennials? Why do I think this?
From the research I have done, the most popular channel among millennials is 'Channel 4'. Millennials are the group of people who are born between 1980 and 1995. To media, they are described as lazy and are said to "Spend all the money they should be saving for a house on avocado toast". This generation is the first generation to fully experience the digital world, which makes them self-sufficient as they don't rely on others to solve their issues. Other qualities that define this generation are: curious and confident. I think that millennials enjoy Channel 4 the most because they may find more mature content as apposed to content for younger audiences on other medias.
Section 3: Who are baby boomers? Why is Netflix popular among them? What do they prefer?
From my research, baby boomers are the group of people born between 1946 and 1964. They are named accordingly due to the mass of births given proceeding World War II, they are also the only generaton to be named by a government body (The US Census Bureau). They are described as committed, self-sufficiant and competitive (This is because of how many there were). Netflix may be popular among them because of the wide variety of content, from shows they have already seen before to new shows being released. I believe they prefer drama/crime as well as comedy and fantasy, this is because of storyline as well as mature themes the content could have.
Questionnaire (Data collection)
Types of questions I asked were: Closed questions, Open questions, Multiple choice questions and Scale questions, I used these types of questions to get the best and most accurate results. Using these questions, I hope to find out whether or not people watch Netflix, the preferred genre and their favorite series/film to watch. I sent my questionnaire to my teacher who sent it around to others.
I decided to ask these questions to gage if there is a Netflix audience and, if there is, how frequently the audience engages with Netflix content. This is important to my research because it shows whether or not there is an active audience to watch our product.
I decided to ask these questions to expand my knowledge on the audience, to also gather the average age range and the average gender between our viewer base. This is important to my research because I can then determine what type of audience we will have.
I asked these questions to see which type of content a general Netflix audience would watch, this would also show me how much of a general audience would view our product. I asked the final question to show what specifics a general audience would watch such as 'The Cuphead Show' and 'Peaky Blinders'.
