Planning for Posters

Updated: May 25, 2022

POSTER CONCEPT 1 (BETA)

This is a very early version of my first poster concept. This includes the base background as well as the foreground prop (Police tape). You are able to see near the middle left of the concept that I was (At one point) going to add police beacon lights to showcase the crime scene feeling more, however I began the complete redesign before fully implementing this, so the red glare is all that remains.

One thing I like is how much the police tape sticks out from the background as the tape itself is a harsh yellow while everything else is a dull gray. Another thing I like is the border surrounding the image (You are easily able to see it around the edges of the police tape) as this give the poster a more tense atmosphere as if something terrible did truly happen. The reason I went with this approach is because it can tell the story through the poster as well as making the theme of the poster appear grim (As it should).

What I improved from this (This is seen in the finalized concept) is that I made the background location fit the story the film would tell, I also decided to make the image brighter as it is hard to tell what certain aspects of the image actually are. I also decided to remove the beacon lights as I found that they partly ruined the atmosphere.

POSTER CONCEPT 1 (FINALIZED)

This is the finalized version of my first poster concept. As mentioned above, improvement to the beta have been done and, overall, the poster concept looks far better. There is an additional standout object (The body in the background) which adds to the police tape, this shows the crime done easier and makes both of the key objects more obvious. The poster is not as hard to look at, I fixed this issue by not only changing the brightness of the overall image but also changing the background image entirely. These changes not only help the poster appear accurate to the story it is trying to tell but also be nicer and more interesting to look at.

One thing I like about this concept is the logo/film title near the top of the poster as well as the release date at the bottom of the poster. I designed the text to appear white with (What is shown to be) bloodstains covering it, this was done to show that the crime done is a murder case through the text, it also tells the viewer the genre (Crime/Horror) as blood is associated with both genres. Another thing I like about the poster is the tagline, "The truth behind Australia's most bizarre story.", this is a tagline similar to ones used by other movie posters. The reason I chose this tagline is that it would interest the viewer into watching this film due to it using enticing language such as "truth" and "most" as well as making the poster realistic and dramatic.

I do not believe many improvements would need to be made as the poster itself is very well made, a poster similar to this one will be used in the final version.

POSTER CONCEPT 2 (PRE-FINAL)

This is the "Pre-Final" version of my second poster concept. This was made just before the finished concept, I am showing this as many changes were made in the final version. The most noticeable difference is the logo position, it is on the far right of the screen rather than at the top or bottom. I changed this as I believe it looks unappealing and generally ugly, however, I would like to keep the colour scheme of the text.

The cast names are also on the left side of the screen, which I think looks unappealing as well as the fact that the text cant be seen very easily, the poster itself is very cluttered and overall needs to be improved (Final Version below fixes these issues). The primary thing I like about this poster is the background (Which is one of the few things which will be kept the same in the final version).

POSTER CONCEPT 2 (FINALIZED)

This is my finalized second poster concept. A rearrangement to most elements in the poster has been done to keep the poster less cluttered but also display a lot of information at the same time. The poster is heavily inspired by research I have done previously, this can be seen by the face looming over the city (This city is where the story takes place). This was done to partially give away the main antagonist as well as to make them appear threatening.

I like the layout of the poster, It shows information at the top and bottom of the poster with an image in the center. I also like the text variation I used for the title, It isn't the same as the other text on the poster which adds variation and makes the title more noticeable. I also like the lower quality picture of the city, it makes the image appear like it was taken in the past, which brings authenticity (As the story takes place in the far past). I kept the blood covered text from the first concept as I believe it really sets the mood and genre (Horror/Crime).

I don't believe many improvements need to be made to this as it is a good poster in itself, however I would add a black gradient to the top of the poster so the test up there is more visible.

POSTER CONCEPT 3 (IDEA VERSION)

This is the earliest version of my third poster concept. The initial idea was to have a bloodied frame of the killer in a home esc setting, however, I found the idea too difficult to pull off as no images of Tracey Wigginton would fit in any frame without looking unnatural so I decided to go with a full redesign with an idea brought from recent research.

The initial idea itself isn't bad, I found it quite unique. However, the idea would not have reflected the storyline as it would give the idea that the killer is the murdered victim when it was the other way around. I am glad I decided to change the design to keep it consistent with the colour scheme of the other posters as well as the storyline.

POSTER CONCEPT 3 (FINALIZED)

This is the finalized version of my third poster concept. It uses the same text as in the first poster concept to keep the posters consistent. The redesign came from an 'illustrated' version of the Evil Dead poster (In research post) which showed a simple version of the evil dead poster with a red hand coming out of a large strip of black ground which also has trees and a house atop it.

I like this poster concept because it is simple and stylish. The area surrounding the poster itself is to give partial shading to the border without using shading, it also looks like blood which helps convey the story. I also like the colour difference between the knife and the hand holding it, the colors themselves go well together and create a nice blend of three simple yet effective colors. The colors also make the tagline stick out amongst the rest of the image as well as the knife the red colour encases.

The only major improvement I would add is to add a release date/'Coming Soon...' somewhere in the concept. It lacks that information and feels slightly more empty than the rest of the concepts, I also wish I aligned the logo properly to be more centered with the black shading around the bottom.
