Poster 1: The Shining
Binary Opposition: The knife going over the woman's face to reveal the reflection of a man. This represents the narrative by showing who the killer is without telling you directly, It also shows a possible protagonist (The girl). If this is the case then it tells a subtle story without text, giving us a visual narrative.
Poster 2: The Unseen
Enigma code: The imagery shows the reflection of a child with a woman looking back. This comic esque storytelling gives us questions about the plot; Who is the child? Who is the woman? are they related? Is the child a ghost? These questions come from vague, visual hints given to us through the poster as well as the story partially told through the poster.
Poster 3: Halloween
Action code: The knife being held beside the pumpkin shows to us that the movie is about a murderer or a murder case that takes place during Halloween. We know this because of the Jack o lantern as well as the knife joint to the Jack o lantern, giving hints towards the time of plot as well as the plot itself.
Definitions
Action code: Action codes hint at action that will happen during the movie, for example a gun could be shown to hint at a gunfight that would happen midway through the film. Enigma code: Enigma codes create questions regarding plot elements through visual storytelling such as shadowed figures and dimly lit objects. Binary opposition: Binary opposition is the contrast between two objects/themes against eachother, examples include the contrast between the colours red and blue shown together to illustrate two opposing sides.
